How the final grade formula works
Your class grade is a weighted average: the part you've already earned plus the part that depends on the final exam. This calculator works backwards from your target to find the minimum score you need.
The formula
Example: Current grade = 82%, final worth 30%, want 90% overall.
Current weighted: 82 × 0.70 = 57.4. Points needed from final: 90 − 57.4 = 32.6. Required score: 32.6 ÷ 0.30 = 108.7% — which means this target is impossible without extra credit.
Impossible targets
If the needed score exceeds 100%, your target is mathematically unreachable with the current grade and final weight. Options: lower the target, do extra credit assignments, or accept the grade your current work projects.
Plan ahead
Use this calculator before the final to know exactly what to aim for. Even knowing you need 65% vs 95% changes how you study. If you haven't entered your current grades yet, the grade calculator computes your current average from individual assignments.

- Enter your current grade, the final's weight, and your target. The formula: (target − current × (1 − weight)) ÷ weight.
- What if the answer is over 100%?
- Your target is impossible given the current grade. Lower it or find extra credit.
- Can I use this for any class?
- Yes — any percentage-based grading scale.
- Is this calculator free?
- Yes, free, no sign-up, runs entirely in your browser.
